Found Pet Report

Steps to take if you've found a pet:                                                  Printable Version

1. If the pet is wearing a collar with identification tags or a name plate, contact the owner immediately. Keep in mind that animals with longer fur can have tags hidden from view. If no identification can be found on the animal, call your local veterinary clinic or LHS to see about having the animal scanned for a microchip.

2. File a Found Pet Report below. We may already have a Lost Pet Report that matches the description of the pet you have found!

3. Secure the pet. If you are unable to confine the pet and search for its owner, call the Lenawee County Sheriff's Department at 517-263-0524 to have the pet picked up by Animal Control. All strays picked up by Animal Control are brought to either LHS or the Addison Veterinary Clinic for a mandatory stray boarding period to allow pet owners time to find their lost pets.

4. Place a "Found" ad with your local newspapers and radio stations. Free advertising is provided by the following newspaper and radio stations in the Adrian area:

The Daily Telegram: 517-265-5111
WLEN: 517-263-1039
WABJ: 517-265-1500

5. Check the Lost Pets section of our website and area newspapers & radio stations every day while the animal is under your care.

6. Distribute posters that include a description of the pet, when & where it was found, your phone number, and a photo of the animal. Talk to as many people as possible when you distribute your posters. Ask if they have seen the found pet in the area and let them know that you are searching for its owner.

7. If you live near a County Line, call or visit the shelter or the animal control facility in the neighboring county. Some animals can travel quite a distance in a short amount of time.

8. Check with local veterinary clinics to see if their staff recognizes the pet you have found. Distribute your Found Pet Report or posters to the clinics also.
