Rehome Your Pet

Strays

Owner Surrenders

Intake Process

If you feel as if you can no longer keep your pet, please consider every available option before giving up.

Behavior issues? Consider contacting an animal behaviorist, trainer, or check out ASPCA's Virtual Pet Behaviorist. Financial issues? We have a Pet Food Bank to help keep pets at home, where they belong. Moving? Many apartments and houses are pet-friendly! Found a cat outside? It most likely is just exploring and will find its way back home. The reasons to give up are endless, but so are the solutions!

If you feel as if you've explored every solution, however, we are here to help. Please understand that we are not an open-admission facility and do not euthanize to make room for new animals. As a no-kill facility, our residents mean the world to us and remain with us until they get adopted, even if this process takes weeks or months.

Therefore, animals are accepted by appointment only

Stray Animals

If you have found a stray dog, please contact Lenawee County Animal Control at 517-263-0524

  • Strays are boarded at Lenawee Humane Society or Addison Vet. Clinic for 4 business days while the animal is publicly advertised and an owner is located
  • If an owner is not located, the animal is spayed/neutered (if at LHS) and adopted out
  • Although strays may come to LHS if space is available, they are considered county property until an owner is located and therefore you MUST contact Animal Control
  • Feral and unsocialized outdoor cats are unadoptable through our program but can be trapped, spayed/neutered, and returned back to the wild where they are comfortable living (Check out our TNR program, Operation: FIXation)

Owner Surrenders

  • We accept dogs and cats only
  • No small animals, livestock, or wildlife
  • We accept power breeds, senior pets and special needs pets
  • If your pet displays major aggression or untreatable health issues during the intake exam, we may not be able to accept the animal into our adoption program

Intake Process

  • Call the shelter at 517-263-3463
  • If space is available, an appointment will be set up to meet your pet
  • Your pet will be assessed during the appointment to determine if he/she qualifies as an adoption candidate
  • If your pet does not pass our assessment behaviorally or medically, you will be provided with other options
  • If there is no availability, keep checking back with us every couple of weeks
Due to the high demand for space in our shelter, we are unable to keep a waiting list or notify you of space availability
  • We do not perform owner-requested euthanasias
